Most of the music of movies or the anime is tied to the memory of the movie or the anime, so the music is more evaluated than the quality itself. When you hear the music, sometimes(or everytime) you remember the scene of the movie, don't you ?
Of course I also have the tendency, but I often listen to the music of movies and animes which I have never watched. For instance, "Shining Boy & Little Randy", "Boogiepop Phantom", and "Nankai Kio Neoranga". I know nothing with Nankai Kio Neoranga completely. But the music caught my heart.
Like neo ranga, to me, I know little about "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". I only glanced at a few image or heard a story fragmentarily. Though I cannot be interested in the anime (with the original novel or comics) , why some of the song used by this anime hit my heart ? (though there are many exceptions...) I already listen to "God knows... " many times.
Then, I listened to the other song "Yuki, muon, madobenite.(means "Snow, silence, by the window")"as a trial. I became the fun of this song though I know little about the singer Yuki Nagato.
Especially the sound of 3:23 of this video moved me. Is it only me to have been moved by the sound...?
But, if I know about this anime, I watch the video with more pleasure... ? In my opinion, even though I don't know that, the song makes me excited.
